Greetings
from the last postcard!
Dear Friends
and Family,
I hope you have enjoyed this visit to Café Island? I think
you can tell that we had a great time making it happen, both for
ourselves and for the entire Burning Man community. Nothing quite
compares to experiencing and participating in the real thing,
so I encourage you to pay us a visit in person.
Some will say that this project is too long. Those are usually
the people who couldn't find any pictures of themselves. And my
Dad will say that too, even though there are not one, but two
pictures of him in it, and even one by him. Some battles you just
can't win?
Well, they
may be right. Except that documenting, celebrating, and publicly
sharing all the devoted work, volunteer fun, performances, art
pieces, visitors, and impromptu gifts is one of the few ways that
we have of saying THANK YOU to the hundreds of volunteers and
thousands of visitors who help make the Center Camp Café
a thriving community center in the middle of an otherwise barren
desert. Combine that with the fact that the majority of this community
spends 1 week a year together in the city, and the other 51 weeks
a year wishing they were there, and I think it barely scratches
the surface. I just hope that it brings back the warmest of memories
and a heart full of peace and love to those who may otherwise
be facing a winter of cold, feeling disconnected, or disheartened
at the current state of world affairs.
To
my fellow citizens of Black Rock City, I cannot thank
you enough for the pure and utter inspirational joy that you bring
to my life. I wish that my camera were a mirror, so that I could
show each one of you just how beautiful you are. Witnessing the
sounds and visions that you create, and the kindness, compassion,
generosity and love that you share with us all, I am absolutely
convinced that we are accelerating the mindful evolution of humankind.
I am honored to walk among you.
I dare not
speak for the multitude of talented photographers, film makers,
artists, and writers whose renderings contribute to the rich tapestry
of documentation that helps share our story with each other and
with those who need to find it. However, I believe that they would
all join me in thanking you for being so worthy of remembrance
and celebration.

you'll enjoy these links to my other documentation projects and

Last
but not least... If you read Larry
Harvey's recent speech at Cooper Union you read about the
concept of bridging social capital. As a community, we accomplish
such amazing feats of creative collaboration for the purpose of
a week long camping trip in the desert. Just imagine what we will
be capable of as we continue to connect in the rest of our lives.
As I wrap up this and several other altruistically intentioned
projects, it is clear in my mind and heart that I want to and
have to continue working within our community on projects that
hopefully help make the world a little bit nicer place for us
all. If you know of any projects or positions that could greatly
benefit from the diverse talents of a computer-geek-photographer-photo-editor-artist-costume-addict
(who by the way has a Master's Degree in Computer Science and
spent almost 10 years working in the corporate IT world), let's
talk. You
can find a resume and tons of gratuitous details at the root of
this website. I look forward to your intriguing ideas!
And of course,
if you are planning an event that should not be forgotten, don't
hesitate to contact
your dedicated documentrix!
Thanks for
visiting Café Island! See you on the playa! |
