Greetings
from the middle of nowhere!
Dear Friends
and Family,
It usually takes about a day to get acclimated to the playa heat,
dryness, and altitude. I'm lucky that it usually just takes me
until the next morning after my arrival (some folks are really
knocked out for a couple of days), which gives me plenty of time
to drink lots of water and use plenty of tissues until my nose
gets used to the constant barrage of dry alkaline dust. After
obsessively arranging and decorating my home for the next month,
a rented 12 foot cargo van, CameraGirl is on the job!
The cable work for the Café structure is in progress and
the Café is said to be 5 days ahead of schedule! Dr. Jones
says that the playa gods have certainly been tested with people
constantly mentioning how far ahead they are in their work. The
Commissary tent and kitchen are coming along and they should start
serving meals in the morning.
The crews are
working at night, just in case the unpredictable playa weather
turns inhospitable. You never know when you could go from being
5 days ahead to 5 days behind, just like that! Though when you
are standing on a construction site, surrounded by old and new
friends, in the middle of nowhere, at the edge of darkness, on
a warm desert evening, with the Milky Way above so clear that
you could almost wrap yourself in it, that doesn't seem like such
a bad thing. |
